Advice on hydraulic cylinder port

Hi folks looking some advice.
I've a cylinder with 1/2" ports but my hydraulic pump has is a 3/4 NPT outlet.
Can I cut the pipes and the 1/2" ports off and weld on 3/4" ports so as I don't have a bottleneck as such?

doing that, cutting and welding is just looking for trouble.....just get or cobble up a converter/adapter........

The cylinder re-furb guys replace those pipes all the time.

Pumps will typically have bigger ports than rams because a pump will typically service more than one ram/motor simultaeneously. I would leave well alone.

My pump is a 2 stage 22gpm on a 16hp engine and only servicing this one ram on a log splitter. Is there any downside to what I want to do?

Really no need to
I do make hydraulic rams so speaking from experience .
If you pump was producing to much flow for the pressure relief valve in the valve block you’d need to put a diverter valve in but

I can see with the two stage pump you want very fast approach before going on load .
You can put a recycling valve in to take oil from the return circuit and feed into the out stroke and visa Versa

On looking at the picture with my glasses on I can see the feed pipes and see your concerns but I’m sure you’ll be ok as velocity goes up to flow is ok

Yes I want fast approach and return, please explain the recycling valve to me a bit more, I don't fully understand it

You can use this chart to check you have right hose size

if you draw a line from the flow rate through the hose bore it will then tell you if it it sufficient

But as @pressbrake1 said quite often you want a restriction in the flow to allow some damping , typically on the return from digger rams where you have the weight of the arm too so you want to restrict flow

For your application 1/2 hoses fine

Just bush the 3/4" down to 1/2" and get on with it.
