I made that comment and I live in the middle of nowhere. Seven miles from the nearest town. I need personal transport but the future is a long time coming. You do seem very narrow minded where the future is concerned. We will probably both be in the ground and not see the results of current affairs. It rarely has an effect in the short term but the long term is bleak for personal transport.

Rural folk are disadvantaged again, all these schemes are thought up by city folk….high speed broad band for all, yea right, as long as you live in the villages on the main route. Public transport, yea right as long as you live on a viable bus route. We have neither by the way. Electric car chargers, yea but only once they upgrade the power lines to the village.

All these schemes need to start somewhere……but non of them will suit all the people all the time!

Absolutely, we don't have mobile phone signal here so have to use WiFi calling. When the internet goes down we have no phone.
There is one bus to town per day but the stop is half a mile from my home.
Oh and no taxi will travel out here either.
But I love it here

You have a bus, your spoilt…..I wake up to this view daily, Ill suffer no bus or fibre, its worth it!

Looking at a Tesla yesterday quality of finish leaves a lot to be desired, paint finish body gaps not good, was not a friends just a parked one, so did not get a look inside.

Hydrogen might not be practical but the image I posted is the tip of an iceberg. Plus plugging in all those EV's in overnight will not be possible with our current infastructure.

To take your points individually

The picture - not sure where it originates from or whether it’s real, or just staged because it’s quite funny - obviously if it is real it’s pretty bad, but that’s a big if. I mean, I got this pic off the internet so I guess we should look at getting rid of petrol stations?

Grid - you are almost certainly right when you say the grid of today couldn’t cope with every vehicle being an ev and being charged overnight. But that’s not what anyone is proposing. Given cars with engines of some form will be sold for the next 12 years, possibly longer if the deadlines are extended, then how long before a substantial majority of vehicles on the road are pure EV? 30 years? That’s the grid that will have to cope with every car being charged, assuming something else doesn’t come along and either displace electric or supplement it.

Hydrogen - I’ve read, but I don’t know conclusively, that to make hydrogen using electricity takes 3-4 times the amount of energy than you would use if you stuck that in a battery. So the grid won’t cope with battery cars but could cope with way more electric needed for hydrogen production? Then you’ve got issues with storing it, transporting it, leaks, explosions, the fact it burns with an invisible flame, poor energy density so you need lots of it… there’s a lot of downsides. It may well have a part to play in certain areas (agriculture, haulage?) , but personally I don’t see it being a solution for mass personal transport. I was involved in a trial to run a float glass furnace off 20% hydrogen last year, the challenges faced made me realise that we are a long way off using this as a replacement for petrol.

This was my point really, the timescale is for a future nobody can predict with accuracy. We all have a view and somewhere in there the reality will spawn.
I personally won't live to see it but my grandchildren will. I also know I can't influence it so making the best decision for my circumstances, just like you have, is the only way we can move on.
