My brother attends a local adult education centre. Does silversmithing etc. It looks like it's closing

A council leader has hit out at Kent County Council over fears an adult education centre will be closed.

With possible closure in January he and his hobbyist jewellery making class will be looking for alternative premises. Sounds like the metalwork lecturer will be out of a job too. To me it sounds like the prices were maybe kept too cheap for too long (£17 for a two hour lesson). Deliberately? Let's see if it gets developed into flats etc!

They were trying to think of a venue they could perhaps hire that has benches and tools for light metalwork, annealing etc. Spoken to a couple of local menbers on here suggesting school workshops etc. that route though would likely need a caretaker to stay behind / open up. Pity none of them have a bfo workshop space a bit like a mens shed etc. Almost wants a farm building etc where the owner can make a few quid.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Indeed. A lot of the schools around here got rid of all their lathes, mills etc on H&S grounds!

Worth asking local 6th form colleges if they have any workshop space going? Are there any Mens sheds that might help? Or is there a local Hackspace?

Quite frankly I think that T-shirt is is very poor taste. Once SWMBO here has finished watching Emmerdale I'm going to ask her to take it off.

heres my thoughts on these organised things

organise other things as well

have a shop that sells stuff like second hand shops and put back into the area with men in sheds / adult education centers

they all need to do instead of expecting handouts all of the time like they all do

the salvation army do a few things within one building up here

a cafe / second hand shop / meeting place that can become a adult learning center

men in sheds and many other organisations need to go this way

men in sheds can use a multitude of things within a building

a workshop with a cafe and a second hand shop can also become a meeting place as well

Liability risk alone would put most folk off renting/allowing the use of buildings/facilities, starts the second someone sets foot on the property .

The writing was on the wall for places like the Victoria centre when government funding was withdrawn 20 or so years ago. The French language evening class that some friends and I used to attend there trebled in price. Class sizes of pretty well every course at the Victoria Centre were decimated; many courses just folded through insufficient numbers signing up. In the spirit of of those days, we 'privatised' the course, paying the teacher ourselves in cash and using a small church hall in Gravesend as a venue; obviously not so simple to do when tools etc. are going to be used for Silversmithing or similar.
