Hi everyone,
I’ve started installing the high-powered alternator to my buggy to support the winch. The idea is that it's closer to the winch than the rear-mounted battery, presumably won’t suffer from voltage drops, and will let me to adjust the system voltage to 14.5-14.8V which the AGM battery can handle.
Finding a voltage regulator with the higher AGM voltage has been impossible. After spending way too much time searching through catalogues, I found that external regulators were mostly used until the 70s, back when alternators had lower capacities, so none of them can handle my 130 amps. Even trucks of that day had sub 100 amp alternators
I’ve had to stretch my budget and found a digital marine regulator (Sterling BW) that looks promising but has a conservative charge voltage. It also times some of its battery charging stages, which isn’t going to work on a buggy that never runs for more than an hour. I also came across the Transpo V1200, but it’s very big and seems like overkill since it’s designed for alternators that do hundreds of amps.
Before I commit to the V1200, I wanted to ask if anyone knows of an external regulator that can handle 130 amps and has adjustable voltage or supports AGM voltage (14.5-14.8v)?
Also, the original alternator was set to spin at 15,000 RPM at the engine’s redline. I’m thinking of increasing it to 18,000 RPM to get more amps at idle. From what I’ve read, this should still be within normal alternator speeds, but I’d appreciate to hear your experiences?
