Time to switch to oxy propane for heating and cutting , Tig for welding and brazing

Maybe.thing is ,I learnt to braize and gas weld 42 years ago,then cutting 6 years later,so hard to change,would like to try,how about mig braizing,maybe evening class at Hereford?apart from money saving what other ad/disadvantage?

With propane you can definitely braze , cutting is better than acetylene but you have to keep a longer flame length between tip and piece than acetylene.
Welding I think it's impossible.

Advantages
More calories so bigger parts can be heated quicker than acetylene
Way safer than acetylene (acetylene can start a fire even inside its bottle without any external cause )
Cheaper

Disadvantages
Less heat it reaches roughly 500°C less than acetylene
Dedicated tips
Can't weld


about Mig brazing I can't really say anything since I've never MIG weld in my life

Propane makes a lot more dross than acetylene and leaves a more jagged cut. We tried it on a profile cutter years ago and had to go back to acetylene as propane was not tidy enough.

You need to go to better nozzles like Koike or ESAB HD nozzles to run propane and get the best quality cuts. Normal PNM nozzles are junk.

propane is damn right dangerous in a confined space remember that too.

It also puts a lot more heat into a part you are cutting which can exceed thermal cutting standards, reduce the UTS, impart thermal stresses.

Acetylene is a far superior gas to propane for cutting by hand and scrapping up to 75mm thick.

Propane should be used for heating over acetylene. Using acetylene for heating is just wasteful. Unless you’re doing flame straightening and need a concentrated heated area, then it’s impossible to do with propane.

BOC industrial cylinder yes.

bear in mind we have 8-10 cylinders and a grand rental every year.

I paid about that for a 6Kg Propane in September / October

I don’t mind that £15 charge,as that’s a delivery,saves me a 17mile trip each way.
I’ll try BOC,WOULD be an agent as boc left town 20 or so years ago,possibly pushed out by this whipper snapper. @TechnicAl ,I pay about £50 odd for a 46kg propane.
