Looks more like £37 plus VAT - then there gonna be add ons - if you wann to add/process loads of incoming invoices in photo form and attach to a merchant server for POS card payments - and then I gonna need another one for rental portfolio stuff...

Speak to your accountant, they will possibly have discounted options if you arrange it through them!

You are missing the point here - I have always done my own accounting - for the whole 41yrs I've been self employed.

Ahhhhhh Ill reword then, speak to an accountant, don't talk to yourself, unless on hold to the revenue. My understanding is a fair difference in price, if purchased through an accountant.

Alternatively just wind up the business and retire!

Self assessment forms were free if I recall...

Previous to 1997 - there was no cost to submitting your books.

Your quote "Alternatively just wind up the business and retire!" - that is not gonna change anything - I am a landlord as well... (so I never gonna escape this)

MTD is just the tax folk reducing their costs by pushing them on to the poor business owner, keeping tax rises down possibly.

Business owner and landlord….you are broad shoulders that keep getting mentioned, obviously dont count as a working man!

I've tried using the QB feature of uploading PDF Supplier Invoices that come in via email..... but found by the time you faff around editing them so they are right & have the correct bill number (plus I x-ref parts bills to the Job they were ordered for so its easier to track / find if i need to) - it's easier to just add the bill manually (& you can add the pdf as an attachment though I've always saved them.down into Supplier Windows Folders anyway).

But for sure - keeping it all processed & audit trail IS time-consuming on thr front end..... though you get some of that back in terms of closing out to invoice faster, processing payments, finding the bills & job cards etc easily if there's ever a query or a repeat order/job/additions (also why every job I have the Car Make, Model & Reg as well as the agreed scope of work on there, as well as customer phone & email).

What you lose on the swings.... you don't get it all back on yhe roundabouts for sure.... but the Admin is an inescapable part of the job.

There are some positives - like the Reporting Functions, the search facilities to quickly find bills & customer jobs etc - plus the running total on your VAT liability for the quarter etc....
The Accounts Software can be a useful tool - if you take advantage of it by having good housekeeping (which you must have been doing with your Spreadsheet anyway) - at least then it's not just one more cost with xero benefits.
