Hello all,
I am currently mid-way through a mission dealing with extensive rust on a 2008 VW Crafter. The vans factory paint is single stage 2k Acrylic white.
In short, I have ordered the wrong paint, mixed to the wrong mixing scheme and sprayed a section of the van. Thankfully, I am only just starting the respray and I hope (fingers crossed) I can fix this relatively easily.
I have mixed lead free base coat thinking it was 2k SS Acrylic with a 2:1 paint to hardener ratio with 20% thinner / reducer added on top. The finish is great, nicely colour blended and it's buffed up nice. However, I understand that as this is base coat it needs to be lacquered to protect it. The rest of the van is not lacquered so using a clear coat is really not an option.
I have tried removing the paint with 2k Thinner but it is absolutely bullet proof and thinner is not touching it at all.
My current plan is to sand back with 600-800 wet, feather out the blend area 1200 to 1500 and then to shoot a couple of coats of the correct paint, 2k Acrylic, over the top.
- Does this sound like a reasonable course of action?
- I will try to remove as much of the sprayed paint as possible but what happens if I don't remove it all i.e. what would happen if I just shoot 2k Acrylic over sanded back base coat? Assuming all of the solvents have dried out would there be any issue?
I have attached some images to show current state of affairs.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
All the best
Chris
