I had a scary accident last week with an 115mm angle grinder......
I use a rubber backing pad with fibre discs and I was sanding down a part.
The sander I was using was my spare one because the gearbox had gone on my normal grinder
The spare sander is real heavy and a right handful to hold.
Anyway I was sanding a part down when it slipped under the pressure from the rotating disc.
The part had a 90° flange and this hit the disc with so much force it took a massive chunk out of the rubber backing pad.
The sander then ripped out of my hand and flew into my gut with an almighty whack
I was really winded and for a split second I did'nt want to look down........
I was half expecting all my inards to fall out onto the floor!
Luckily the sander switched off when it hit me and I only got a couple of small cuts from the rotating disc.
I ended up with a bad bruise around my belly button about 6" x 3" in size
So be careful with those sanders
Did you have a side handle on it Andy ? I had to make a new handle for one of mine after the plastic one split and I will not use them if I can't hold with both hands as I don't trust the grip in my right hand due to an old shoulder injury. The handle is a piece of 20x5 flat with a 90* bend and a hole drilled in it to bolt it to the grinder and it does a sterling job.
Sorry guys did get a chance to look for the offcuts today i was on another part of the site, proberly wont be there anyway, the sites dogsbody picks up anything shiney even follows the sparkys and plumbers round when there in he's a bit of a pie.......................key.
What i can do is take a pic of the finshed product btw the sheet was a splashback for a kitchen.
"theres about over 30 diffrent grades of stainless
the reason when cut it it doesnt leave any burn marks it has a low thermal conductivity less than mild steel"
Slighty off the subject a little, but Hitch has a point there, why dont these tool makers but pictures of what could happen if you use a certain tool wrong,i mean they do it with fags, theres warnings etc on drink, then for drug we talk to some guy call frank, what ya get on a power tool,oh a little warning sign and a bit of waffle.
I still reckon the angle grinder is the most lethal but they reckon the drill press has the highest rate of injuries
No, I need to use them one handed for sanding, I hold the part in my other hand
That's why I buy smaller sanders with lower wattage motors
My spare sander is a Halfords one and it is a full power one, I usually have it set up as a disc cutter.
But I had to get a rush job out and had to resort to using it
Only my second post but i cant resist joining in on this one!
Many years ago i worked at a boatyard & a bloke there was cutting scuppers in the sides of a ferro cement trawler, he had aquired some old discs that were not reinforced enough if at all. One burst & a large chunk ricocheted of the hull & went between his ribs under his arm. He had a large hole in his lung & spent a few months in hospital. I have had a few near misses with grinders & they need a healthy dose of respect.
