get some the right length but wider and cut them down.

If the arrow has worn off look at how the joint is lapped. You need to be dragging the outer lap backwards or you'll strip the belt in seconds.
Pull them, they tear easily enough. You may nick the belt if you use a knife. If that gets caught, the belt is bound to stripIt's probably a daft question, but how exactly do you cut them down?
