Abrasive Flap Discs Flat/Angled

They come with a flat face or an angled face. I had no idea; I literally learned this a few minutes ago. Benchmark Abrasives refers to the flat face as a Type 27 and the angled face as a Type 29. If I had to guess, I would say the angled face is more useful with the guard in place since the guard will not allow you to get the disc completely flat unless you have your grinder hanging off the edge of the work.

Nobody here uses flap discs? I just want to know if you use Type 27 or Type 29. And also tell me if you use the guard with the flap disc or not.

I use the angles and every grinder I have has a guard on it ,,, all 31 of them ..
Some are cut down a tad , some are thinned out a bit , but they all have guards on them , if you have to take the guard off to make a tool work , your using the wrong tool .

The flat ones are better suited to use on flat surfaces, the curved ones are designed to get into contours and corners.
Personally I prefer fiber discs for grinding down welds or preparing flat surfaces as they work fast, cost less and last much longer. But flap discs do have their uses.

My Makita grinder includes instructions that specify removal of the guard for use with cup brushes and rubber-backed abrasive discs.

cup brush makes sense ,,, just . but the rubber backed discs nope , I keep the guards on . Even though they only really work as a hand stop , and I wear welding gloves .

do they do 1/8 inc flaps for doing welds ,,, or are they the plasticy embedded grinding discs ,, they may be handy ,,, if not best I patent them quickly.
