That's a real surprise in an old and quarryApparently it's a big sand seam under there, add running water....

When I was AEC dump truck driving at Arlington reservoir a 54 RB dragline slid into a sludge pit under the river, the top pulley was at ground level. Took a while to get it out!I have seen a 9D Caterpilla complete with a full scraper box disappear into a sink hole. I say sink hole, he had scraped about 3mts depth off the surrounding landscape and happened across an underground stream, he was stood on the roof of his cab and all we could see was the hands waving. One hell of a mess, they had to literally build a road down into this huge cavern and drive/drag this monster complete with scraper box out of this hole. took weeks. Running sand is a nightmare, I suspect this sinkhole is a result of an underground watercourse doing its thing.

its easy enough for them to test the water . they had to do it on our spot . tons of water coming on to my spot from the railwayThere's been a water leak on a mini rounderbout near me for the last two years or so, the monkeys have been out three or four times digging up the road but never fixed it, I think they have said its runoff from the woods but it's always wet even when the rest of the runoff has dried up, I wonder if we'll get a massive sinkhole one day?
Ah you saw that too. Some of the aerial footage I've seen shows a big crack in a large pipe that runs parallel to the road.
SesWater say they had a burst water main. Some of the aerial footage I've seen shows a big crack in a large pipe that runs parallel to the road.
Was this the sinkhole in Frindsbury? I lived just round the corner!Take a bucket of dry sand and add water. Volume decreases considerably. Strange that this sinkhole seems to be in a line along the high street. I would imagine it has been cased by a leaking water main over time until the crust at the top collapses.
When I was seven years old, the mother of one of my primary school classmates disappeared down a sinkhole. Luckily for him, he was running on ahead. They never recovered her body, despite several guys being injured in the attempt.
I remember some Army personnel pouring several barrels of bright yellow dye down the hole, to try and find where the underground stream emerged. They never did. They tipped thousands of tons of shingle down the hole to fill it.
Another one appeared about 100 yards away some time later. Right outside someones back door. We used to play in the alley behind those houses !
Yes. back alley between Bill Street and Randolph cottages. Was 1967. Woman was Jean Thompson and her son was called Mark. The other sinkhole was behind the houses in Bingham Road. Was this the sinkhole in Frindsbury? I lived just round the corner!
