Godstone: Huge sinkhole swallows up more of Surrey street

A second sinkhole has appeared in the street, with a car teetering on the brink.

I was disheartened on several fronts for the residents to find out,

The estate or some of it including the effected area had been built upon a sand quarry and according to a spokesperson and for whom " it's going to take many months to repair "

I understand those involved with repairs are going to have to make sure the road is stable and no properties will be further affected, that will take a little time.

I'm hoping for the property owners its a mains that leaked over time and just undermined the road, but months!

It was also reported insurers were already playing hardball with owners.

It was a reference to a comedy sketch, donkey's years ago, where someone (Jasper Carrot ?) had rented
a skip, and in the morning, before he got started, it had been filled up with a 2cv dumped on top.

I have seen a 9D Caterpilla complete with a full scraper box disappear into a sink hole. I say sink hole, he had scraped about 3mts depth off the surrounding landscape and happened across an underground stream, he was stood on the roof of his cab and all we could see was the hands waving. One hell of a mess, they had to literally build a road down into this huge cavern and drive/drag this monster complete with scraper box out of this hole. took weeks. Running sand is a nightmare, I suspect this sinkhole is a result of an underground watercourse doing its thing.

Apparently it's a big sand seam under there, add running water....

There was talk of a burst water main because of reports of loss of water pressure prior to the appearance of said 'ole.
