picked my father up for lunch at a pub earlier, pulled off from a set of lights, into 3rd and....no power, all the dash lights glaring away, then dead. Got it over to the side of the road, nothing obvious re sensor faults or anything, no tools on me. My father ended up walking home as it was only about 2 miles to get his car to tow me home.

had some food, went out to investigate, checked the fuses, all ok, tried it again and the thing started first time!!!

i swear it is mocking me

im with you, I do hate French cars. this is the only French car I have had, my others have all been fords. I decided not to go with another ford as I had spent a lot of time working on both my fiestas and the escort was a project anyway but ended ip selling it shortly after getting it on the road.

will be going back to ford I think, although most modern engines are all the same now with sensors on top of sensors to check other sensors

yes but you test it when its working fine so it will show up ok, I would at least take it apart to make sure the carbons are ok and not getting stuck

to be fair the alternator wouldn't cause a sudden engine failure, plus the battery is still taking a charge and was still fully charged when the engine died. it seemed like a fuel starvation issue but when we pulled the fuel inlet pipe off the injector rail it ****** out

that is true, but with the ecu shut down nothing would work, I found that out when I took it off to do the engine mounts, hadn't quite connected the main plug back up and it wouldn't do a thing.

ran diagnostics on it earlier and there are no stored faults, which doesn't really mean anything and I doubt I will manage to test it when its doing the same thing

it turned over but wouldn't fire, tried disconnecting the battery to reset ecu but all that did was make the alarm go off when i tried to start it again.

this is true, but I would still rather a ford. my mate has an st220 with no issues, my grandfather had a sierra from new in 92 right up until he sold it in 2006, used it as a taxi for a few years and it had 500k on it when he sold it to his neighbour for 40 quid.he had a disability car after that and chose a focus which gave him no trouble in the 6 years he had it, a few lads in work all with mondeos diesel and petrol, no issues except one who quite frankly ruins every car he owns anyway and even then it was only the brake master cylinder that needed changing.

I don't think there is a car out there that has no common or well known faults, just a case of finding one with the least likely faults
