A welder too far?

^ I've done that before now. If you're not careful tho you can get into a sort of arms race with yourself. See something that fits the bill, but if you just spend an extra £50 you get this, well if you're going to to spend that why not this one, only another £30. What the hell, I'll round it up and get the £900 one.

restorer you ever done gas welding before?, because tig isnt any different, although admittedly i used to have major trouble with gas welding, but tig seemed easy

Nope, first time for me. All I have is a mixed gas torch for lead/tin soldering. This is a whole new world.

will be fun for you to learn then. just remember dont dip the tungsten tip into the welding pool. Must admit that bit takes a little getting used to.

A mechanic friend is donating some old motor parts and panels for me to practice on.

one thing to remember with TIG is the material being welded must be clean. Arc/mma will almost let you weld any old dirty bit of steel, Mig like the steel to be clean and can cope with a little surface rust, TIG likes it spotless. But tig give the nicest welds by far, a good looking tig weld is an art work of its own.

Just wondering if when you first start it might be better to learn using no filler rod. Basically just use the TIG torch to melt both parts until they start to fuse together. Once you got the hang of that, then you can worry about using filler rod if required

Only just picked up on this thread The Inverter Fusion machine wins hands down over the Blueweld & the Butters... much higher specification, better quality & better after sales technical support from a specialist Inverter manufacturer. That said Restorer, you should find the Blueweld fine & they are certainly better than some of the Chinese junk offered on eBay.
