About this time last year, I purchased a Portamig 235 from Weldequip on here.
It took about 2 months from ordering to completing delivery, but I knew there could be a wait and there were a few holdups along the way over Christmas. But some times in life you just have to wait for things. Buying a welder isn't liek going to tescos and buying a TV
Anyway, the welder has sat in a slightly dirty farm workshop for the last 12 months. It replaced an old (but good) MIG that had finally got too old.
I chose the Portamig because it looks rugged, simple and reliable. There is nothing clever about it, nothing complicated about it. In fact, the internals of it look similarl to the 20 year old MIG it replaced. A great big transformers, a big motor and a few robust switches.
The welder has certainly not been babied. In fact, it has been rather abused. It certainly no longer looks particularly new. I always find a good layer of dust on top of the welder prevents things from rolling off.
It was orignally purchased to be used by me for my own projects. But it soon seemed to move to the main farm workshop? as soon as any of the other lads found it? All the workshops are now one so it is there forever I fear!
Anyway, point being, it has had pretty heavy use this year. ie. it has been used pretty much every day. Everytime something is broken - the Portamig is dragged out (normally by the wirefeed hose) and used. It has been through 50kg of wire, which is no mean feet. Admittantly most of this was used building up buckets for hours on end.
It has survived 1 x flood and 1 x I found it sat in the middle of the yard in the middle of a summer rain shower having been used to fix something and then dashed off again.
Apart from that, it has had no maintencance apart from a few shrouds on the nozzle
It is a also a pleasure to weld with and seems to lay down a satisfactory weld no matter how wrongly it is set.
Overall I am very pleased with my beaten up and abused Portamig
