It's old stock, they've had a moulded rubber protector on the top for some time now. Check it comes with a full warranty, I suspect it may not.

Isnt a warranty valid from date of sale,not the date the dealer put it on the shelf?

yeah, mine doesn't have a rubber bit on top but even if it is old stock it was so much less than I've seen anywhere else its still a bargain to my eyes. I'll buy a bit of rubber and glue it on with the money I saved and still be quids in!! As far as I'm aware the machine is exactly the same underneath? And the warranty period should start from the date on my invoice as far as I'm aware, I've not tried to register it yet, I'll let you know!

Usually a dealer has a set time to sell stock before the warranty starts ticking...

It's often 3-6 months. I'd have to check with EWM to see how much they offer. Seems a bit mean but it's a bit of a big ask to expect a manufacturer to warranty something they potentially made four and a half years ago.

I've just registered the warranty with ewm. It's all done using the serial number and it recocnised the machine correctly and ive had a confirmation email with a pdf certificate attached. I haven't seen a manufacturing date on it but it does have a calibration certificate dated 8 Jan 2016 so maybe not mega old? Even if it sits in a box unused for 4 years I can't see what difference it makes really? I can appreciate what you mean from the manufacturers pov though. Compared with a work environment all day every day use which these welders are aimed at my hobby use will be miniscule. Hopefully it'll give me years of trouble free service and the warranty wont be needed!

It's a pretty mega warranty, it's covered even if it's used 24hrs a day 7 days a week! You do have to have it tested every 12 months though for it to be valid. What is involved in the testing and how much would this likely cost?

I charge £15 + VAT for the test, I won't bore you with the details but it's effectively a thorough electrical safety inspection and a clean.

I bought one last week. Cheapest I found a pico 162 elsewhere was £495, cant remember if that included vat or not either so 350 notes inc vat and delivery, from a known company with a good reputation is a bargain!

They are advertising the newer version but selling the old.
Bit misleading as this is their photo

it wouldnt bother me personally as i dont use my welder as a step ladder so i dont need the rubber strip

A bit of rubber doesn't bother me either, I'm still happy with it. Only thing I'm miffed at is that whilst looking at an auto helmet i found the ebay shop has a regular website too with it for £320 (£350 minus fees I guess?) so I could have saved £30 if I'd checked! Still a good deal though. Lesson learned for next time!
