A REALLY stupid question?

I'm making a rack to fit a Vespa and I want to tack it in place in-situ to make sure everything is in the right place, as it will be difficult to do on the bench.

I'm worried about sparks, blobs of molten metal etc flying off & damaging the paint or other parts

Is there any kind of fire-proof fabric I can use to "mask" areas I want to keep safe?

Nip up Tesco's and get a fire blanket, its a good idea to have one where your welding anyway.

Weldequip sells a welders blanket (under safety equipment) - I don't have one myself so I'm not sure how effective they are. I imagine a domestic fire blanket would be better than nothing. I've never had to protect anything too critical but have gone with Brightspark's suggestion on occasion.

Won't the fire brigade provide a free one if the wife rings them up & tells them she is thinking of cooking chips in an open pan?

Beware, big blobs can burn through cheapy fire blankets quite easily.

I use an old leather welders apron to protect things from spatter.

If you're set on doing it for nowt, a thick wad of wet newspaper works after a fashion if a bit messy. Make sure to keep it damp though, or you will need to use the fire extinguisher that we all keep handy when welding!
