A question for the veggieoilsts

A question regarding filtration of used oil, got about 1000gallons of waste engine oil I would like to filter and pump to a smelter. I am looking for a self priming pump that could cope with that viscosity oil and filtration that would run for a reasonable time before it needed cleaning or element changes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Following with interest as large generator services generate alot of used engine oil would be interesting to use it for heat in my foundry or forge instead of a company paid to come take it away and recycle.

What smelter are you using with it?

Many use MM TAM105 water pumps and those 10 inch water filter elements (varying micron ratings)
Of course pumping from above the sludge.

Centrifuges are better but costly and slow.

I use a 12v version of the Facet Dura-lift on the 110 Bob, in a place of the crappy mechanical lift pump on the 200tdi. It copes with 100% SVO fine. Think it could do the job you want but read up first.

If you're using it for a smelter, I guess it depends on the burner design.

If you're just dripping oil into an airstream that blows it somewhere hot enough to vaporise it (aka "oil burner" Australian chap on YouTube) then I don't see much need for filtering.

But if you're using some flashy pressure jet nozzle, I guess you'll need to.

So really depends on the burner setup.

On my very basic setup I have a pump pumping in a loop back to the oil tank with a tee off the loop and two valves, one on the return to the tank and one on the tee itself. By balancing the two valves (manually) I can tune the output.

A single pipe would also have worked, as impeller pumps can mostly work against a closed valve, but I wanted the contents of the oil tank to be normalised (mixed) also.

What smelter are you using with it?

I am putting together something big enough to melt wheels/cylinder heads without having to cut them up. I have finalised the furnace design but not the burner side of things.

After reading up on burners its probably a mistake, according to one guy they are greedy for air and will keep a fairly large compressor running flat out, I think I will go with an air regulated pressure pot full of engine oil through a conventional nozzle and fan, just use the above gadget with kerosene as an igniter. I want to build this smelter on a frame so it can be moved about with a forklift, idea being I can use it in the middle of the yard where it wont matter if there is a bit of an accident with it .

@8ob guy called oil burner on you tube, builds some crazy hot waste oil burning burners for doing exactly that, been toying with the idea for a while, but not quite there yet... seems simple enough, doesn't need anything fancy...

might simplify things for you... don(t think there's a lot of filtration going on with his design..

My eldest son has been running engines on filtered oil for years, Both veg and engine oil, Also his house heating boiler runs on waste engine oil, Colder weather he warms the oil s little firs before putting it through couple of 5 micron filters.

Im all for saving money but that looks like a time bomb, should have a vent rising continuously from the flow to the tank, no sign of it on that pic

I have a 240v pump with a pair of cartridge filters mounted on a board, no use for it these days, pm me if you wish to purchase, I used it to filter waste engine oil for my waste oil heater at work, I also have a quantity of waste oil that goes with it!

Can’t remember where but there ia
Vent. Also two large hot water tanks in the system both vented. This German boiler has been running great for fifteen years. Only replacements needed have been the compressors for the burner.

The cylinder vent is separate as the boiler heats the coil, the water is in the cylinder

I will dig out the pics of the boiler that exploded, turns out a dip in the vent air locked and the thermostat failed. Thought it was a gas explosion at first but it was the heat exchanger

I look after one on a nursery using waste oils, have a large oil filter in line off a truck and the built in gear pump on the burner sucks oil from tank and a by pass for excess oil back to tank. We go through 7000 litres a year all we do is one filter and a clean mid winter.
the proper waste oil burners can cope with a few bits in the oil so super fine filtering is not necessary.

Are there no regulations on burning waste oil? The fumes be full of metallic compounds and dioxins.
