A question for the tiggists

Are the wire feed adaptors for tig torches a waste of time? Got a lot of thin steel to tig weld in the near future and wondered if one of these would be a handy addition.

Those are for the cold wire feeders to auto feed filler main advantage is to not have loads of stubs of filler go to waste and to have a consistent weld bead. I’d imagine the joint would have to be perfect ie no gaps and exact fit up

Really unless you are going to do loads (packets and packets of filler)I wouldn’t have thought the setup time and hassle would be worth it.

Have to say it’s something I’ve wanted for a while been very tempted by the £500 Chinese units like this.

They're only useful for long, very consistent joints or semi automated welding. You have to get the start and stop and feed parameters just right.

I looked into it for my repetitive box section work (literally thousands of identical 2" welds) but I was advised against it. I can feed wire just as quickly and easily by hand.

I'd still like a CWF at some point but not prepared to pay full price for one. I've also been tempted by the chinese units, they look good, but I imagine if you have a job that warrants a CWF, any niggles or glitches would make it completely worthless.

We used to call some of the production welders "tackers" I don't know how some of them got the job.

i did some procedures using these things ,unless that guide tube is spot on aligned with the tip forget it too much hassle

if you want to try it rig up a mig machine with the welding current isolated in tandem and use it as the wire feeder with home made tip arrangement

I’ve used several of these over the years and in most cases they are more trouble than they are worth, the only unit that I thought was worthwhile was a piece of kit called Tip Tig, but this would probably be over the top for what you want
