Just buy a bison and know you’ve got a quality chuck
how do they compare to Pratt?

Pratt not made in UK anymore. Haven’t had hands on a new onehow do they compare to Pratt?
Not just that but once you have soft jaws and they are getting done due to repeated machining for different parts through the years you can just weld on chunks of steel to them and start againBob, you can buy soft jaws for any chuck, then you can drill and tap the jaws for a fixture of your own devising.
Is anything?Pratt not made in UK anymore. Haven’t had hands on a new one
I’ve got a 3 jaw chuck at home with holes drilled like that. Chuck is between 16 and 20” diameter and the holes are about 20mm diameter. They had some sort of threaded conduit yours if you want it
Buying an expensive chuck will only achieve one thing - well two. Make you smile as you wonder at its beauty when you take it out of the box, and then wonder why you spent all that money and it still doesn't do what you want.
If you're going to be cutting slots in pistons, with guaranteed repeatability you have to make a jig. Which isn't as easy as it sounds when it comes to pistons, since the two references are the gudgeon pin and the thrust face. You could use the top, or front face, but this assumes the manufacturer has machined them accurately (good enough for slots I would say).
In the past I've made a gudgeon pin with an internal thread not fully formed, so when you mount your piston you can screw a socket head plug in there and tighten it up.
Thats very kind of you Parmster, my options are get a chuck big enough to drop a piston into with modified jaws or go with a small chuck and use extended jaws as per pics. Biggest piston is 4.125 diameter so if that would go into the bore of the chuck I will take you up on the offer, I will cross your @Parm with some sheckles
If it was just the one piston size I would agree but there are several to do which are all different, I understand the cuts need to be indexed to the gudgeon pin bore and cant see it being much of a problem to add a fixture for that. Interesting about the expander though and stealing that
Bob
Anyone fancy machining up some jaws? I will need a few different ones to suit pistons with different ring widths.

No hurry
Bob
How urgent is this requirement ?
Bob speak for sometime this decadeNo hurry

You also missed out on an opportunity - you could have bargained for keys to his toy shed
It looks kinda frightening but I’m too old to know any betterHow the jaws are made
IdiotsIs anything?
