They wouldn’t say “in position” for welding in the flat. They’d say downhand. Welding In position means positional welding, vertical/ overhead/horizontal.Never heard of them... doesn't mean they aren't used in some weld shops though.
J prep refers to a special bevel for butt welding on pipe, usually. Not sure what I prep is, it can't be very common.
Pre-turn for welding - could be specific vernacular for welding in-position - that is, all the welds carried out on flat position which is much easier to get right. Most people would just say in-position.
We say in position for welding on the flat, and out of position for anything else. They wouldn’t say “in position” for welding in the flat. They’d say downhand. Welding In position means positional welding, vertical/ overhead/horizontal.
normal enough to me.Aah, I thought downhand referred to direction of welding; whether from left to right - or right to left.
As someone that's right-handed, I TIG weld from right to left in the flat position - and the same for MIG as it gives me better visibility of the corner root, etc. But I get the impression that this is unconventional..?
yeah... I believe it's technically right, I'm only exposed to a few welding shops around our way so not sure what everyone else calls it... to be honest I thought downhand was another term for downhill welding on pipe which was wrong, but never bothered to check because it's not something I come across at work at all, lolso do you call it an out of positional weld then?
