A New Factory

Recently on my travels I've seen something that I haven't seen for a very long time. Folks Britain Plc is building a new factory. We are moving into the production of off shore wind turbine blades. It's the first and only factory in the UK that can make 75m, yes 75m long blades.

Some land has been reclaimed, a factory being built and kitted out. 1000 jobs are to be created. The first few groups of intakes have had 9 weeks in Denmark at a sister factory, they are now in a skills college which has been specifically built for the project then will be handed over to the city to be turned into a trades training centre, carpentry, plastering, brick laying, plumbing etc

Once the students finish college they will go back to Denmwrk for another 9 weeks to work in the factory before the new place opens and starts production sometime in September

This new site and training model is the blue print for two other factories making the same blades in Morrocow and Egypt, where the UK staff will go to train the new intakes

A real success story this, well done to them

The place near Chepstow makes the masts that these blades will fit into. Two completely different business working together very closely

My neighbour works for a firm in Rotherham that makes the nuts & bolts that hold the tower to its base.

Watched many a floating crane and barge Come into the docks with pylons and blades for the offshore farm off walney, hellish things to be up close

even more when your working on one 90 meters up and u have them to climb each day a few times

that was the fairfield maybe place ,i saw the advert for the plant & machinery-very sad.

Bro in law did a bit of a stint as a fitter on them, spent more time sat in the brew room watching DVDs as the weather was too bad to put a crew on

Yes Mabey Bridge used to build this special type of modular bridge as well as some of the motorway bridges we see, years ago they realised that there was no market left for these so they diversified into wind turbine masts and built a new facility just outside Chepstow. Sadly the bridge business is gone or going but wind turbine masts is thriving

its quite sad about mabey bridge...when rowecord went bust as a result of TATA steel ripping them off, 2 lads i was in college with were eventually given postions at mabey bridge to finish their apprenticeship in fab welding...now thats gone as well and they werent allowed to transfer over to the masts

What happened to Vestas in Campbeltown on that sticking out bit of Scotland.......I know it was all a bit messy....I think the name changed to Celtic Wind or something (could be mis-interpreted)

and arent Siemens building something on the Humber

There was a guy on BBC radio earlier, who is the gaffer in Siemens. He reckoned the "developements" last week made them unlikely to invest more in the Uk wind turbine projects. They want to export them all over the world and the problem of trade agreements, or lack of them, means they might make them elsewhere.

There is a Mabey company still making modular bridges but the company/division which did the wind turbines closed a while ago.

Crazy isn't it !!!

But they are a very good company to work for, staff get looked after very well and pay is above average too

Always wondered why Harland and wolf didn't get into building the masts, surely they have the ability.
