Its possible to convert a mig to tig?? He says you remove the wire and you can get tig tungstens that will fit in the mig shroud?

He's talking rubbish, if it was as simple as that we'd all be doing it.
You can convert ARC welders to TIGs but not migs, not without an awful lot of work anyway.

I think i have some tungstens that fit inside a mig shroud in the bottom of me toolbox.
No good for anything, especially not tig welding with a mig welder. They literally would fit inside a shroud, Youd do no welding mind.


Even if it was true, you'd need a different gas cylinder....unless he talking about a gasless mig

My mate is one of these who always has bigger and better no matter what you have bought....

Hence his welder is a better brand than my sealey, he's got a eurotorch on it, only works with argon ( i use pub gas) etc etc.

Then we got on the subject of tig, with me saying i fancied having a go but couldn't justify the cost of a decent tig set for occasional use. Thats when he started saying i could convert my mig to tig, i didn't think you could but with my knowledge of tig machines being not much better than nothing i couldn't be certain......

At least his ideas have given you guys a grin

As said, your mates talking rubbish. Mig/Mag uses a constant voltage and tig/mma uses a constant current power supply (in most cases). There are inverter machines where you can simply plug the tig torch into the euro connector, change the gas, press a couple of buttons and weld, but they cost in the region of several thousand pounds for a decent brand.
