a little help please

I've recently learned to mig weld through work and a mate of mine has asked me to help him do some repairs on a car he is fixing up.

However I don't have a MIG welder so am looking to buy one, mostly because it would be useful and I would also like to keep up the practise. The problem is I have no idea what to buy, for the repair project I'll need to weld the floor pans into a VW caddy pickup, being around 6mm thick. Am happy to get a second hand one and not looking to spend more than about £150, also most of the work will be done outside so am look more for a gas/non gases welder rather than just gas one.

can anyone give me a bit of an idea as to decent makes and maybe more what no to buy for this sort of thing.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum!
Your budget is likely to be the most limiting factor, here.
Maybe, just maybe, you'll find a second hand clarke for that amount.
Also 6mm would be very thick steel for car panels - usually around 1mm.

I think it may be a good idea to learn mechanics as well because with 6mm floorpans throughout a caddy you are going to have to fit one massive lump of an engine to make it move

I think you will find CJ is correct, more like 1mm is the norm.

I also agree re his suggestion of a Clarke machine, about as good as you can get for a hobby machine and plenty crop up around that price.

For £150 you may get a used Clarke 130 or 150, they are not going to do 6mm though

Where did that figure come from?

£150 won't buy you much but for general car repairs you ought to find something reasonable.
Avoid anything on ebay though, it's the world's junk pile.

yeah I will admit I was completely wrong, it is much thinner than I first thought , you'll have to forgive me it's the first car project I have helped on so it's all a learning curve!

found a couple almost new ones that I think should do the job
