Hi SHox.. I did not go to crazy cleaning as I was literally just trying to test the welder and make sure it was working OK.. I have read well that it needs to be cleaned thoroughly. I adopt that principle when welding stainless anyway!

Contamination and hydrogen are the two biggest killers with it. I would suggest a SS wire brush that you keep and use only for Ali (write on it ALi only to prevent use else where) try and scrub it in one direction. acetone is very good for wiping down your consumables. As you may know Ali is self oxidising so there is no point been over prepared and cleaning all your metal as you will be wasting your time unless you weld it with in a few hours of cleaning.
