Well I've spent enough time lurking on here so I thought I should share my latest project.
So from the top then, after a bored afternoon at work I found myself perusing eBay as you do and came across an Audi S2 coupe for sale just up the road, I thought it rude not to go and have a sniff around at it so off I toddled. I got there and instantly thought yeah its skanky, proper skanky, never the less spoke to the owner and went for a short blast (went like stink but clunky as hell) had a good poke around, it was a mess and fit for the breakers to finish it off really, there was no service history, evidence of offside damage that had at least been repaired with genuine bits and didn't look that major. Got home bid my ******** off and bought it!
Fetched it home, gave it the once over, there were a few leaks to attend to and a few grotty bits but overall everything worked and suited the daily duties just nicely. Drove it for a few months, fell in love and decided that I couldn't keep beating the old girl everyday, I was killing it. So off the road with the S2 and the A4 stepped in to take over the daily commute
.
Now I already have a fairly nice everyday car (A4) with enough power to keep any man happy on his way to work (430HP) so what was the point in having another nice fast road car? I decided I wanted a track monster so with the S2 sitting on the driveway all defenceless, I decided to waste no time in getting stuck in. There were obvious signs of rust lurking here and there and I wanted it gone so I did the only thing you can, gut it completely.
Thats the interior & wiring dealt with, all the interior is now sold. Went like hotcakes! Next came all the oily bits
So thats all the oily bits out, well there are a few bits still to come out but im getting there. Now it didn't strictly happen in that order but hey it read better that way
Bit of degreasing to stop me looking like a coal miner everytime i go near the engine bay, looks alot better.
Now getting on to the nitty gritty, the areas of concern don't look that bad to me but what do I know! What do you think?
Back rear quarter/arch area
C pillars
Driver side floor pan, cut a little bit
Windscreen frame
Sill
Rear floor pan, underside
To add insult to injury all 4 arches exteriors are kanckered as well!
Now these obviously need repairing and i decided that trying to TIG the car back together was not going to happen so following the good advice on this forum I plumped for a new shiney PortaMIG 185 for this project direct from our man at weldequip. That should be with me hopefully in the next week or so and in the meantime I have work to do before it can get it mounted on the rotisserie, yes on the driveway
Now your probably thinking its not worth it, but consider the fact there are only 400 S2 coupe's left in the UK and only 260 odd are on the road, breakers are culling them at every opportunity so the small heard is being thinned very fast as the parts fetch a fortune especially the engines, for those who are unaware they have a 2.2 litre 5 cylinder 20 valve turbocharged lump obviously connected to the agricultural quattro drivetrain much like that of the Group B sport quattro of the 80's just watered down, but they are very potent in tuned form
. Oh did I mention I have been given a spare donor coupe shell which is solid (not a quattro but will fix what i need)
Just have to go and fetch it in a week or so.
So the short term plan for now is repair the shell so its rust free & stitch weld the seams for a bit more rigidity, beyond that im still pondering how far to take it
Due to the car being outside once its dark I reside in the garage sorting out all the bits to go back in. I've already done the suspension, ball joints, bushes painting blah blah blah, I use the POR 15 products to rust proof stuff, seems like good gear and of course some pictures
Bit of a cheeky stitch as there known for being a bit wobbly! Would have been easier waiting for the MIG but what the heck, was a pig to weld with the TIG
I've since decided I want to convert my struts to coilovers so they will be reworked at some point. I've got stuck into tearing the motor down to add to the pile to go off to the cleaners its bloody filthy.
Work started on the 28th June and thats as far as I've got single handidly. Im hoping to haul ass before the winter and get through the worst of it. I will keep this thread updated as and when things happen with the usual flurry of pictures
Christ that took ages!
