8x4 trailer axel question

Hi all

I have some left over 50mm box and I am in need of a new trailer so I am going to make a 8ft x 4ft box trailer. I am unsure as to what the best way of fitting an axel is or as to what the best axel would be to use. I have a landy discovery axel but think it may be a bit over kill and complicated to fit!

Any ideas on a cheap axel set-up.

ive just rebuilt my trailer .who is to say when it was built . they cant its a joke there to be abused

Same here... used the old hitching arm and axle... so what date would i say mine was built?

As long as its safe there shouldnt be a problem.

As far as I know, you just have to pass a safety inspection, lights, blinkers, chains, tow hitch, ect....

Not here in Europe especially in Britain where we not only blindly follow what Europe has to say, we then take their ideas and we embellish it and make it even more complicated.
You are no longer SUPPOSED to use vehicle axles for new build trailers
instead of having useful laws, like having to have breakaway chains to join the trailer to the vehicle we have breakaway cables that if become detatched it slams the brakes on the trailer which then has no steering, so that on the freeway it leaves it for the people behind to slam into it as it then has no lights.
I did hear it was illegal to have both breakaway brake cable and chains !!
I would have thought that was the best. So that the type of idiots that dont lock the jockey wheel up and cant feel when it is doing 20,000rpm on the road, know when the trailer has come off because the brakes have come on !!!

Ok if my cheap landy axel idea is out can anyone recommend where to buy trailer axels and what sort of cost they are?

If you want landy wheels try ex ministry suppliers they sometimes have axles off ministry stuff

Try towsure's website or HERE. I think they do indespension stub axles which bolt or weld to box tube.

Landy axle is a bad idea as they weight a lot and as the handbrake doesn't work the axle brakes your into a whole new world of problems with hydraulic brakes

It's been illegal to use vehicle axles on new built trailers for many years. There is now a requirement for a new trailer to go through a test that can/will include load calculations.

That's the official bit

Reality is as long as the trailer isn't dangerous or looks a mess it very unlikley you'll ever have any issues.

You built it years a go and recently refreshed it

Only issue is the age of the Discovery axle may give the game away but that would involve someone really going to town on you.

Caravan axle there are a couple of caravan frames on ebay?

Caravan chassis tend to be poor for load rating

Find an Alko caravan chassis. The axle is removable as one unit with bonded rubber suspension. You can cut them in half and narrow to required width if too wide. Auto reverse brakes as standard. Keep hitch / brake cables / wheels and weigh in the actual chassis - sometimes alloy :-) Then make your own chassis to take the caravan axle, hitch and brakes. Job done and components within the current rules so would pass inspection.
