Hello, I am trying stick welding using Everlast 160 "tig" welder which has stick mode. I am obviously very new to welding. I purchased my first box of electrodes by Lincoln Electric 7018 (3/32). The box says they should be used between 65-100amp. The problem is rods sticking when starting. here is what I've learned so far:
1) at 65 rod would stick pretty much every time.
2) at 100 the rod would occasionally stick.
3) it "seems" moving the ground closer to the welding area might be reducing the sticking
4) 80% of all the sticking happens on the new rod and much less so once they are 50 and more percent consumed.
5) scratch start is by far better in terms of sticking than tapping.
6) the machine has a setting which increases amerage for a short time to reduce sticking but eventually i just turned it off as I do not see any difference.
7) the machine has a setting which drops the amps to 10 if it detects sticking. I am a bit scared of turning that feature off worry i will not react quickly enough to disconnect the handle. so i have not turned it off..yet.
Any ideas of what I could try to reduce sticking would be great.
p.s. I dont have any other box or brand i can compare with
