6G coding advice

Hey guys.

This may sound silly to some of you but I'm just wondering whether or not I'd be fine applying for 6G coded MIG jobs with a TIG root and MIG fill and cap certificate? You see, the college I am currently training at only offer 6G codings with a TIG root (I have no idead why), however, most job ads I've come across just seem to require 6G coded MIG welders. Would I need another 6G coding in just MIG?

Advice/help greatly appreciated.

You can do the same position or weld in any of the processes so yes. Afaik.

Sorry if this sounds daft but are you saying that, because I could gain the coding in the process without a TIG root, I would need to do so before applying for MIG jobs? Or are you saying that I'd be fine because I will have proven that I can weld in the required position with both TIG and MIG?

You can do any position and weld combination in each process. You can't do say tig for one Coding then be qualified to do the same weld with mig or MMA

If you can nail, say a 4 or 6" dia pipe in 6G, tig root, mig fill/cap. You will easily do same with MIG all the way. I would say, tig root shows you are more competent and, if STT, hard not to get pene with this process!!

You would have to test out to companies procedures, anyway.

One thing to check though with the job adverts, that when they say 6g coded Mig welders, is wether they mean solid wire, metal cored wire or flux cored wire.
I think you will find that if you test in say Tig root, Mig fill and cap (solid wire) that this process is all it qualifies you to do. It doesnt qualify you to root with mig.

Thing is though, if you go for a job for a coded welder, then the company will get you to test out to their procedures, but being previously coded shows that you can weld within a set procedure to a specific standard, so will make them more confident that they can employ you, pay the fees for your test and you have a clue what you are doing due to passing tests previously. Rather than pay out the fees and somebody not having a clue what theyre doing.

I'm currently welding to a good(ish) level and, although I haven't practiced doing many 6G roots with MIG, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do so.

Think I'll go ahead with my TIG root, MIG fill and cap coded training course and then try for my coding once I'm happy enough that I'm ready.

Hopefully, potential employers will then see this as proof that I can weld to a good standard and allow me to test for jobs.

One more thing,
ASME IX or BSEN 287-1 and why?

If you might be making bits which get exported outside of Europe where I dont know wether BSEN would cover anything (never exported anything myself, so that is just a guess).
ASME is the standard worked to by the vast majority of companies in this country that work with pipe, vessels, storage tanks etc and anything else related to the oil or power industries.
Structural work, or general fab work I think you'll find is where the BSEN would be used??
Thats what ive gathered over the years anyhow lol

BS EN stands for British Standard European Norm. It's the European Norm bit which is key. Means accepted European wide. EN 287-1 is a direct comparison to Asme 9, they are both used on pipe and pressure vessel work and are pretty simerla with testing requirements. I do think that the EN 287-1 has been superceeded and will be phased out and replaced over the coming year or so. But I'm sure someone with more knowledge on the subject will be along shortly.

EN 287-1 is now parallel with ISO 9606-1 to 2015

In a few years you have ASME IX no longer necessary because ISO 9606-1 supersedes for Europe.

Matt I know that EN287 is a direct comparison, but most places Ive seen jobs advertised for this kind of work, ASME is the code standards the companies work to from what ive seen up until now.

Will be a good thing in my opinion when ISO takes over though, as at least everybody will be singing from the same songsheet lol

interesting different ways to do a 6g tig and mig
well I did a course this year in tig and mig I got a 287-1 in stainless steel tig fillet and butt weld and a 287-1 in mig mild steel 10mm fillet
it cost me a small fortune and still no decent job offer
like others we asked for more money where we work answer was no,the company wont pay any more your better off looking for another job so I am' I clear £241 a week
any idea where I can move on

to be honest I don't mind what i weld I just want to get a better wage than 13k a year
and I don't mind travelling or staying in digs

Well it's one of those backgrounds where you can mig in a jig for £9phr to welding engineering on the rigs for as much as the top surgeons get. Self motivation is key here. If you want to get out and do more then you need to do it on your own steam. (I don't suggest you quit till you find what your looking for by the way) what is your honest skill level and where do you want to be. If your capable of doing a 6G open root you shouldn't have a problem getting what your after. If your a highly skilled fabricator in various methods again a move should be fairly easy. Been skilled and been qualified are not the same thing. I do not have a recognised 6G open root coding and no intention of getting or needing one for what I do but like most guys with welding kit at home and time to practice I've successfully achieved that joint a number of times with a tig open root. If I was you I'd simply knock on doors and tell em what you can do.

good to hear some advice thanks I have only done fillet and butt in stainless and mild steel I have done a few single passes in tig and mig on tube on small tube 3mm thick 2mm thick 30mm diameter so a bit of a novice on pipe I don't know to much about fabricating I mainly have skills in jig welding I have taught my self tig mig over the years I went on a course which I thought would help passed and got 3 x 287-1 codes but so far the odd offers of temp work maybe I should have taken the leap took a chance as not much has come up could be me being 55 that don't help I do chairs and brackets what ever I am asked to weld just plate 2mm welded to 10mm plate fillet - butt welds box'steel tube .plate etc all in jigs
