Looking for advice, I am looking for some welding doing on a trailer frame, its behold my capability's as it will be used on the road and want to make sure its safe, I have a few people to speak to, just want to choose correctly. The reason Im asking as I had a company around last week and when I said it was going for IVA testing and needed to be spot on. He wanted more money as i wanted good welding. Im not a welder but I would of thought there was only one way of doing it and it should be right. Ned less to say I didn't give the job to him.
Will a 200 amp 240v rtech mig welder be good enough to weld/penetrate 5mm steel.
Is there any obvious questions I should be adking?

its either good enough from the very start even to be tested

however it maybe for the paperwork that you need for the welding thats been done

Anyone that charges more for 'good' welding should be avoided in my opinion...if you aren't giving your best work at all times you are a cowboy...that's like me saying it's going to be 500 quid extra for me to lift your item without damaging it...

200 amps will weld 5mm with good prep and technique, potentially a multi stack weld...for a fillet you want the throat of the weld to be atleast as thick, if not thicker, than the material thickness being welded, so if you can't get a good solid well penetrated weld with a 5mm throat, you are better to get a root in good and hot then cap with another 2 beads over the top to get your thickness.

Personally I would cut a test piece, mock the joint up and weld it out, cut and etch to see what's what

The IVA requirements for welding are not onerous, it needs to be suitable for the designed application. All of the IVA manuals say pretty much the same. Have you read the manual? General construction covers welding, rivetting etc.
There is no requirement for any "paperwork" relating to the welding.

He Sounds like a chancer, Those sort boil my pish, If I was closer I would at the least look into it. Get a sketch up or cad model of roughly what it looks like and an idea of size. I'm sure there's going to be scores of skilled welders on here your neck of the woods that might offer you a good deal.

I should have added Im not sure r-tech do a 200 amp maybe 180? I could be wrong I just worry that you say it's beyond your capabilities Otherwise your r-tech.. Cranked right up should be more than enough for 5mm.

A 200amp mig will do 5mm thick material with ease.
