Tolex is an American brand of vinyl that Fender and others used to cover their amps with.

I’m not sure this is the stuff you’re looking for. My brother has a 60’s Dansette Bermuda that was my father’s and as I recall the covering is turquoise (probably green or blue once) with a cream white lid and has a linen finish, not vinyl like guitar amps.

i want to build a case which replicates the plywood cases from 1950s/1960s portable record players.
they were about 3/16" / 4mm plywood/mdf/cardboard covered in embossed plastic wrap.

is the "wrap" just vinyl?
where can i get embossed vinyl? (non adhesive- so i can use contact cement? or will the stuff sold for (permanent) vehicle decals work with plywood?

I used to make my own disco speakers and decks and used both Rexine and Leatherette. From memory the leatherette was thicker and had a cushioning feel due to the thicker backing. The Rexine had just a thin fabric backing. I used thixotropic Evostik to fix it down. What colour and how much were you looking for? I think I've got some light blue and maroon but I'd have to measure the size.

black, or dark brown. leather/snakeskin type effect

y'mean like vinyl wrap for the outside? or the formica effect stuff they put on the cupboard doors?

outside stuff......usually black
