50s style plastic coating for plywood cases?

i want to build a case which replicates the plywood cases from 1950s/1960s portable record players.
they were about 3/16" / 4mm plywood/mdf/cardboard covered in embossed plastic wrap.

is the "wrap" just vinyl?
where can i get embossed vinyl? (non adhesive- so i can use contact cement? or will the stuff sold for (permanent) vehicle decals work with plywood?

Can’t remember the name of the stuff but the likes of Wilkinson’s used to do it. Standard sign writing vinyl will work but you’ll need to prime your plywood first to ensure good adhesion and avoid lumps and bumps showing through.

i always found it almost useless for fixing to mdf/plywood -but i've never primed it.

what to use as a primer, though?

and i *might* be able to score a sofa-full for free next time i can get to the charity shop. (i basically swap a day's labour breaking down scrap furniture to better fill the skip in return for skinning the sofas for leather).

i dont know why leatherette never occurred, tbh. - probably because i'm confusing myself with memories of a case my mum covered in "sticky back plastic" at some point in the 70s.

Yeah it’s mince for anything porous.

Visqueen is heavy plastic sheet like DPM. Usually blue.

one of my favourite toys as a toddler was a big box of cardboard cartons and bottles plus a jam jar of white glue (which i assume was PVA - dad worked at Waddingtons, and it came from there, used for gluing cartons together).
its probably where my love of knives came from: we only had one decent pair of scissors in the house, and they were mums tailoring shears.
so i had to use a stanley knife. (at 3 years old. )

Hi, If it's for show then make sure the surface of the plywood case is perfectly smooth and dust free because any dust will look like a pimple on a backside and stand out like a sore thumb. Leatherette is slightly thicker than Rexine but still not very forgiving. It would be better to have some thin foam on first 1/8" or 3/16" will do and will give a better feel and present better.

I usually give plywood a quick skim with filler, then sand smooth for this sort of job.

good call on the foam: sort of like an "underlay". Not sure if I want the cushioned feel, to be honest, but I'll experiment

y'mean like vinyl wrap for the outside? or the formica effect stuff they put on the cupboard doors?
