Can relate. Not looking forward to the task of reinstalling all my various music softwares. Will take me a weekend tracking down keys and serials.

For me it is not so much tracking down the serial numbers it is more that the software is internet registered/licensed and due to the age of it (not actually that old) it can not be done online and requires phone calls to the USA, real PITA.

This is actually a timely remnder for me so at this exact moment I am currently re-cloning my SSD to the backup SSD, no need to reboot or even stop browsing

There is an app that can do that for you. I went through the same rigmarole myself. Spent two days finding all the licence keys for, admittedly MS software, only to find that because everything was registered correctly it all downloaded when I used the Win10 ISO to rebuild my PC.

Found it, it's called Produkey.

Personally I disable Windows Update and when a service pack comes out I will usually then update, by that time all the screw ups have most likely been fixed.

Not sure if you can disable windows updates in the latest versions though?

Bright side is even though I dislike the "toy style" settings the real stuff is still there like 7 / XP mostly under control panel / admin tools / compmgmgt.msc and all the other useful stuff

The thing I really detest about Win10 is the flatness of it, which is why I will never have an installation of it in standard offerings. Then, the taking away of control from the user over things like updates, etc. Stuff that. I found Long Term Stable Branch and I'm set for another half decade of updates and reliability at my choosing, all in Glorious Win7 themes. I did move on from Win2k in the end, and finally, grudgingly accepted XP for nearly a decade, but I've moved on from that, too.
Basically, I refuse to be pushed at the rate MS or any other vendor dictates. I'll go ahead in my own time and they can go spin.

I have no idea of your experience, I'm interested to know how think you know better than me when you don't know me. Back in the day I would write additional settings for fully managed, not just basic messy tattooed setting, as a courtesy for the desktop estate guys and operated to a level where only PSS could sanity check some of my server or systems changes.

Yes 10 is annoying. The desire it has to do enhanced or basic reporting, not reporting off without messing for example, or some of the auto update annoyances that can easily be tweaked as a standalone not part of a domain from GPEDIT that has existed for around 18 odd years and still many have never realised exists gives you options to skew / modify before you even have to get better.

If you really want to be safe you should have 3 discs, a main and 2 backups, that way even when you're cloning the main to a backup you still have another backup safe and sound. At the moment the worst that could happen is something dies when you are cloning your main to a backup and leaves both of them corrupted. With a 3rd disc you will always have one complete backup that can't be affected by any problems whilst you're backing up.

For some stuff that I deem important I have copies stored on 2 laptops, 1 server, 1 desktop machine, 2 external hard drives and several usb sticks, not that I'm paranoid I've still got software that I wrote as far back as the 80's and '90's kicking around, you know "just in case".

I already have TrueImage doing images of all my drives daily. C drive has image done every day to my F drive, my external drive and also my MyCloud, so I should be relatively safe. The clone is not for backup as such but rather just a means of getting back up and running in seconds if the C drive physically dies.

Fair enough, I just didn't want you thinking you were safe having only one backup, I made that mistake once decades ago but got lucky, halfway through writing a backup there was a power outage that corrupted it. Fortunately my main hard drive was fine so as soon as the power was back on I repaired the backup drive and cloned my main drive, then I went shopping for a 2nd backup drive and learnt to do grandfather-father-son backups. Had a nervous couple of hours waiting for the power to return wondering if I was stuffed or not.

The great thing about TrueImage is if my C Drive dies I can then just plug in the cloned drive and be up and running. I can then open one of the images I have on one of the other drives/cloud and grab any files I need from there that are not currently on the cloned drive. It has also come in handy a few times when I have accidentally deleted the wrong drawings or whatever, as long as they were done 24hrs or so before I deleted then I can grab them back from one of the image backups

I could do with something that gives me the option to shut down without installing updates as once the updates have downloaded in the background you have no option but to install them when trying to shut down.
