5005 Vs 5754 (milling)

I cut 5005 all the time.

A real fussy customer wants to send me some material as he is not happy with the specific brushing of the 5005 that I have and wants the job done in the 5754 that he has.

I don't really want to bother getting it lasered, so would rather do the job (flat panel routing) on my CNC mill.

Is the 5754 going to cut in more or less the same way as the 5005 that I generally use?

I'd imagine so, but would like some feedback.

Im already going to be charging the chap danger money as I know (and have told him as much!) that he won't be satisfied with the job, but he can't find any other fool to take it on, so it is what it is...

5754 is basically treadplate, you know, aluminium chequer plate.

I've never cut it to be honest

Have you got any chequer plate you can have a test on.

it's harder than normal aluminium. Therefore it should cut better

No, none here at all.

But, as you say, if its used on floors etc. its not going to be soft gummy stuff, so should be fine.

It's not amazing to machine.

We find the temper makes quite a big difference. H22 was much nicer to machine than H11/H111

As brad says it's not very common you find it in plain plate, nearly always treadplate which is normally H111 just from the work hardening during manufacture.

I think i may have gotten out of the job anyway.

I told the chap (after a million emails discussing the job where id made it clear from the start it would be custom pricing) that id charge him 3x off-the-shelf pricing, and now he is "reconsidering" - which is fine with me!

I would unreservedly agree with this comment. It is absolutely true that 80% of your grief comes from 20% of your customers. Identifying them before they become your customers is the trick.

I used to work as a contractor in an entirely different industry.

One of the people i used to work for, in fairness, never actually once gave me bother, but, if he was cast in a film, he would be the person who, in the bank robbery, just ended up shooting people.

When i realised this, i became "busy" whenever he called to give me work.

I figured life was to short, and, why bother, when you still have food in the fridge...
