5 Stud trailer hub

I've got a trailer that I'm rebuilding and someone has well and truly wrecked the studs in one hub and also the bolts holes in that wheel. The stud holes have drilled oversize and then been well chewed by the coach bolts that were used to replace the the studs, to top it all the wheel nuts were very tight nylocks...

So I'm looking at repairing the hub unless anyone knows where I can find a usable 5 stud hub to fit a lockheed braked suspension unit with a 10 inch drum?

I agree that it could be a Land Rover hub. Is it held on by a 2" (52mm) nut?

Sorry if I'm telling you what you know but...
most brake parts are made by companies such as Knott or alko and rebadged, look on a trailer parts website and measure up width of brake shoe, stud pattern etc to get a match.

A full brake assembly might be as cheap as a brake drum plus bits. The main thing is the backplate mounting holes, and the wheel stud spacing.
google 'wheel PCD' for details on measuring.

I'll get a photo tomorrow and upload it if my broadband at home is fixed, I've just googled landy hubs and they look different, don't they have a spline for the drive shaft to locate?

The suspension units look quite old and the hitch definitely is (Bradley Hydratow Mk3) the backplates are the 10" ones on http://www.westerntowing.co.uk/acatalog/Lockheed_Brakes_Diagrams.html

On my plant trailer I have just purchased no brakes or linkages etc, but on the axle tube is a small label IDing the axle as from Avonride, have you been able to have a look, both axles on mine have the label!


What size wheels? mine has 12in wheels and the brake shoes are 250x40mm

Lockheed bits are mostly long out of production, so you'll be lucky to find one and better sit down when they tell you the price; integral drum/hubs are stupid pricey. If the old hub is remotely fixable do that as it will be easier and cheaper.

I've given up on getting a replacement, repair is the only option

I think I have two options, one is to clean up the holes in the hub and press in sleeves, a shoulder on each sleeve should stop the studs pulling through the hub. I think I'll have to bore each hole to 3/4" to get them back to round and in the right place.

Option two is to drill new stud holes between the existing holes but will the hubs be strong enough? I'm pretty sure they're cast steel and the flange is 3/8" thick, I was thinking of getting the old holes welded / plugged to try and help the strength.

I'd be astounded of it's anything other than cast steel, so my suggestions more or less mirror yours; first would be overbore the holes, weld in a plug(a more elegant variation would be machining for a tophat plug and either glue or press-fit it, then redrill) and redrill the hole. Simply welding it up might do, but the resultant metal would likely have inclusions and might be a bit of pain to redrill accurately.

You could redrill between the existing holes, there's enough 'meat', but to be honest it feels like cheating.
