5 lever mortise lock dimensions

Can anyone tell me if the distance between the front plate of the 5 lever deadlocks and where the key enters the lock is the same for the major makes, Eg. Chubb and yale etc ?
I have to replace a chubb as it has seized up but don't want to buy chubb as a replacement , and going to measure it means a wasted journey.

If you browse them on ebay it shows there are different sizes etc, so may be dodgy presuming they are the same and I can remember changing one years ago that was not the same fit...but can't remember what I had to alter..so not much help there..sorry.

If you get the same size lock, it will be the same.

Usual sizes are two, two n half or three inch lock. The size refers to the case however, not the spindle center.

More than likely to be a 3" lock which is about 58mm (new money, sorry) to the spindle center. Or it could be one of the others.

In answer to your question, a Chubb 3" lock and an Era 3" lock are both 3" cases and both 58mm to the spindle center.

Because it was (a) welded into a steel door and (b) the bolt was stuck out and the door couldn't be closed (its in a shop) so after over an hour of trying to coax the bleeding thing back in by me and two other lads , given up as lost and smashed back in with a 3 pound copper mallet by yours truly .
The lock was one of the ones that had a "nack" to it anyway, you know the sort , jiggle the key up three times, left twice and sacrifice a chicken during highwater mark on the first tuesday after a new moon and it might lock/unlock. I hate that crap, thats why i would like to use a different brand to chubb.

If you can weld well enough to make a door, why not weld on a couple of nuts, and attach it with bolts through the proper fixing holes

Yes correct , easy to do and the lock or whatever can be taken out in a jiffy. Welding it in is simply laziness.

2.5 & 3" lock cases are standard,,,, all holes etc are teh same

some chubb & other high security locks are custom

used to be that the only "affordable" 5 lever locks that were insurace approved were chubb defenders, good solid locks & still in use some 30 years after being fitted.

We made a checker plate door once at a friend's yard and bolted the lock in then welded the bolt heads. I use a bolt and hefty padlock as well nowadays as an extra deterrent.

The two most popular size of Upright sash mortice and the mortice deadlocks, would make the centre of the key at 13/4" and 21/4" from the front of the fore-end plate.
The big variations are in the height of the lock case, the location of the fore-end plate in relation to this height, the width of the fore-end plate, and the height location of the keyhole and if the lock has it, the spindle hole for the handles, any one who has worked with locks and replacing them will know the story all too well.
if it has handles then you will find the distance between the centre of the key and the handle spindle standard, what may well vary is their location on the lock case, some near the top, some near the bottom, I find anything used anywhere to the elements, before fitting, grease it or vaseline it, including the exterior of the lock case.- worth its weight in gold.
but if physically possible replace like with like unless your are uprating the security of the installation.
