5 chamber Wankel!

I'm just posting this because it has slightly rocked my world..I always felt secure in my belief that wankel rotary engines had 3 chambers for some magic maths or geometrical reason. Don't really know why.
Now I have just seen this. A 5 chamber Russian torpedo motor.
Edit: looks like 4 chambers and 5 tips, my brain hurts.
The fuel is High Test Peroxide, which is insanely dangerous and probably sent the Kursk submarine crew RIP to their deaths.
I suppose seal wear doesn't matter for a torpedo

Its amazing, the work and money put into engineering for things to be destroyed. Someone told me about Vincent motorcycle engines being used in flying drones to be used as target practise by the RAF. I thought they were nutty, but they were.

It looks more like a rotary supercharger/compressor than a Wankel engine.

It's in the engineering museum at Heltenau in Germany, and they told me (I think..bit of a language barrier..) that it is a relic of the NSU training course for car mechanics to learn about rotary engines, when then the car (R 80?? ) was introduced.
Showing my ignorance but what is the arrangement in your illustration? Is thst how a Rootes blower works? Or a Hydrovane comp. maybe? Im getting rapidly out of my depth here

One of the modern equivalents of that uses a Hinckley Triumph triple engine.

I rebuilt a 12A 1983 Mazda RX-7 Elford Turbo years ago - I think the array of VAC pipes were worse than the engine internals.

Horrible things...

Only thing I have done to them of late is compression test later RX8 engines.

(I made myself a proper test gauge from a design off the the internet to do this)

RX8 is a powerfull - revvy engine when it has compression - like a chainsaw - thirsty with fuel - and pig to start later in life.

I think we are forgetting the fuelling of this thing, it’s being force fed fuel so only needs an exhaust port. The four chambers look like necessity for the five tip rotor to work, in reality it’s probably only using three of the chambers, one for squirting hp fuel/air into, one for compression and the other for exhaust. It’s quite neat, if I have got my head around this it’s got five firing cycles per revolution
