5/6” da sander recommendations

Got a massive load of sheet coming up that’ll need etching with 120g to prep for powder. Looking for something that’s comfortable to use for a number of hours with low vibrations.

I’ve seen the mirka deros getting rave reviews.

There’s a makita equivalent that’s also well regarded.

Rutlands do one (which may not be an option as it’s back ordered and I’ll need it end of the month)

So that sander has a 350 Watt 4,000 to 10,000 rpm brushless motor powered by AC mains ...? A new one on me.

Well you can get AC mains brushless machines.
But rutlands also described a planer thicknesser as having a super quiet induction motor, and it was the standard brushed motor they all come with.
So I would take their descriptions with a pinch of salt, they seem to make quite a lot of convenient "typos" in their specs that get corrected once you’ve purchased.

I use a mirka air one for hours on end.

Air costs more to run, but the tool itself is light and easy to move about.

There is a copy of the Mirka on Aliexpress for just over £100 (when I bought mine). I have no criticism bar the non UK mains plug it sports.

The paint shop at work is full of pneumatic Mirkas, running 7 days a week with no complaints.

have you ever taken a look at an easy arm

these take away the weight of the tool but not the vibration however with some springs and rubber and a way to lock the arm you can take the vibration out of the tool that your using

another type

Used to use a CP air sander, was a good but im a bit out of date.

I have a Mirka Deros and one of the Rultands Detail sanders like youve linked above but the square one.

The Mirka is 10 levels above the rutlands sanders for quality and if youre using it for hours on end then they are a joy to use. massively well balanced and virtually no vibration. Also pretty quiet. I have spent 2 straight days sanding a hardwood table top from 80 grit all the way up to 320 and it's just amazing. with a decent Vac on it the dust extraction means virtually zero dust anywhere!

The rutland one does a good job but vibrates quite a bit and is pretty loud. Also the dust extraction hose is connected permanently with this annoying 600mm lenghth of hose you then connect your usual vac to which is annoying as it isnt very flexible.

I appreciate I'm not comparing like to like but probably the closest you'll get.

That’s perfect just what I needed to hear thank you I think that’s swayed it towards getting the mirka

Do you have a preference for dust hose? I use a Screwfix vacuum which does a brilliant job but it’s got an annoying semi rigid hose on it.

I’m preferring electric over air despite having the capacity just because of the flexibility of being able to use out the workshop.

Mirka sell their own, overpriced, dust hose.

I have one. I lent it to someone and they sanded a hole in it, which upset me.

But that's the thing to use if you get a mirka unit.

I had the Mirka Dust hose that I managed to take apart a Henry hoover hose and get to work on that. worked a treat

I have a Festool Vac which has its own hose which is really flexible and smooth so it doesnt catch on edges like the ribbed ones will tend to do.

If you can get a Vac with a power take off thats a great thing to have as the vac is only then on while youre using it and gives it a chance to power down while you pause as cheaper vacs are not generally designed to run for hours on end

If the job is keying metal, I don't bother with extraction.

There's not the dust in the same way as flatting paint or somthing like that, and, what dust there is is heavy enough not to mist up into the air.

if youre not bothering with a hose then avoid the rutlands ones. the hose tail they have will annoy you something cronic!

ive got the mirka air unit. ive got the mirka hose, all be it, sanded... i use the extraction hose when doing paint, but not when keying alloy
