4x4 suspension

I have a saggy ****! There I've said it!
My Toyota Surf rear end is getting on a bit (22 this year) and still on its original twin rate hi-lo shocks and springs, pretty good I think! Even when it's only got an average load in the back it hits the bump stops on speed ramps etc.
Has anyone got recommendations for replacement parts? I don't want anything uprated or lifted etc as it doesn't go off road really
I dont think anybody does the twin rate shocks after market and Toyota ones MIGHT be a bit expensive....

Those springs might have sagged by now.

With a car as popular as a Surf there are bound to be aftermarket springs available. There's tons of Toyota info available on Pirate4x4. Or if you want low cost original spec, I've had a lot of luck with autodoc.co.uk.

if it's hitting the stops it would be more the springs are tired as well, the springs holds the weight the shock absorbers just absorb the shocks and dampen the rebound of the spring.

mind you after 22 years, they've both done well, mind you for the cost of standard replacement parts, you might get something more uprated (spring and dampers).

Another option rather than new is that you can get them re-tempered and re-arched. Someone like Jones Springs will do it:-

if you can get them for your vehicle ( Ive put a link up to the Navara as its one Ive got handy) I can thoroughly recommend KYB gas filled shock absorbers, and the supplier in te link. Id also replace the fronts at the same time, at 110,000 miles the original front and rear dampers on my truck had really had it, the new dampers have transformed it

Springs aren't too expensive from either Milner's or Roughtrax. Went with the Milners upated ones first time round. They lasted a good few years and coped with a lot of weight in the back. Got the Rtrax ones when they started going. Not got much input on those, as I took the Surf off the road not long after those were fitted. Your original dampers may well still be fine. I fitted Procomp 9000's(?. The gas filled ones), on mine though, if I recall correctly.

I had the procomps on my pick up they are great shocks too

Apparently their main weak point is/was the quality of the paint job. I painted mine neon green, to give them a bit of extra protection.

My money would go on standard springs with load leveling air shocks, keep the ride quality and on the odd occasion its loaded or towing stuff pump a bit more air into them. You dont even need an on board compressor, you can just blow them up with an airline

To me £74 for a pair of uprated rear springs,
That's fairly sensible priced.

We use them a bit on the older Toyota and mitsubishis because they are alot cheaper than other factors.

Thanks guys, I've been on Roughtrax website already and have found a deal on a pair of shocks and springs that look ok.
The shocks themselves might still be ok and I'd like to keep the duel rate damping but the servo on one is flapping about on the top so doesn't do much! I haven't really noticed the difference between hard and soft to be honest. Maybe this was the final straw....

I would and have but don't fit them as Procomp intended, they just fill up with water and crap. Cut the bottoms off so they hang loose instead
