My wife does some work at a farm where they are at the end of a long track and their broadband is often running at around 0.5mb which is barely more than dial up level.
They are on the side of hill and I mentioned that they may be able get a decent service on 4G. They said they had been down that route before but said it wasn't an option. Turns out there was talk about planning for a mast etc so it must have been some time ago
I took my Ipad up which has a Vodafone SIM in it, tucked it up high and created a hotspot and was able to get 25mb download.
Did a bit of research and got them to buy a package that had a 4/5G directional aerial and a Huawei B535 router. Cost about £280
We tried a Vodafone and an EE sim and both seemed fine, Vodafone had higher download but the EE had higher upload and according to the blurb it was more important to focus on the upload speed.
So after a bit of tinkering because they have solar grids that have to report in and get the direction of the aerial optimised they now have broadband that is anything from 25-49mb download and 8-20mb upload. They are well pleased, a 20gb SIM is costing £18 a month but they will need to go unlimited.
These numbers are with the aerial inside the office on first floor, we could probably get a bit more with it outside but going from 0.5 to up to regular 30mb is such a difference they aren't too bothered
At the peak their numbers are as good as my fibre at home and the upload numbers are actually higher.
Something important worth noting is the fact its a rural area and signal on a mobile phone is patchy so don't rule out 4G broadband because you don't get a good phone signal.
If you didn't need fiddle with settings then you could litterally just pop the SIM in and turn it on, we were getting a reasonable signal even without the external aerial connected
This is the kit they bought
