I've got washing machine and dish washer on hot fill only at both home and work, all working happily for years - parents had the same thing for forever too

I'm sure at least washing machines used to have both hot and cold fill but it seams like none of the new ones do?


as for smart meters... I've no idea why anyone is against them, automatic readings are way better than estimates?

You would be right, but it is the baggage that comes with it. For instance, a utility company no longer needs a warrant for entry. Clickety click and you are now a PAYG tarrif customer, whether is it justified or a mistake. It is now illegal (apparently) from this year to have a car charger unless connected to a smart meter. I wonder why that is? It also opens the gate to variable pricing throughout the day and also power disconnections per property when they want to. Bear in mind that anything the government is insisting on, is never going to be for anyone's benefit but theirs.

After wasting that time on the phone to OVO, I got another email from the today saying the DD was getting put back up. Didn't want to phone them again so tried switching to Octopus, it worked, they are now accepting new customers again and DD is set to £163.

Octopus will also allow you to set the direct debit to only pay what you actually use, be email too - even with Octopus I noticed my DD was being increased, even though my actual useage was going down. I was quite a bit in credit to tem, an excessive amount I thought, so one email later . .. and when they emailed back two days later to say they had done it, they even apologised for taking so long to do it

The bottom line for me is, I don't like the idea of direct deposit. My life isn't so busy that I can't handle my own finances properly, and I don't need or want faceless others in cyberspace to do it for me.

It's just easy - my mum wouldn't do it though. So she was on a rate that was more than those paying by DD, and the occasional delay in getting the bill, sending the cheque and it getting through, meant she got a red letter a few times.

Whereas mine just works . . . As does her's now I swapped it pay DD from my account.

As a born southerner, I have taken on the full Yorkshire trait of short arms, deep pockets - so any saving I can make on a bill, I take. The hassle of scanning the bill and bank statement every month to check they are in agreement is one I can deal with

Washing machines were hot and cold but only cold fill now. You are doing 3- 5 rinses with Hot water which is really wasteful.

that really came in so they could sack the meter readers so more profit for them

as goes for estimates ive no idea where they get the calculations from as they are so far out of, i could swear they do a reading on the highest users and then bill you for it

one thiong for sure i bet the new washing machines cost more on electric than the older fast washing machines did do as they are on longer

DD i cant see why users of direct debit get the better offers when everyone is paying the same bill

i find it wrong and a 3 tier billing system the ones that are paying the most are prepayment meters that are more than likely paying for the users of direct debit to have there offers

I am guessing the rinse/s with hot would offset the power that would have been used for heating the cold water?

But it will also be hotter potentially than required or set on the cycle selected, so washing woollens etc could be affected.

No idea as none of my clothes are worth more than two bob, but the missus has some nice clothes and she is quite fussy about looking after them and does not seem to have any issues, I am not allowed (gutted I am!) to fold her clothes as my hands are so rough they pull the stitching!

There are a few new ones still both bot hot and cold fill.

With the cost of electrcially heating water at the moment, for those of us with gas combi boilers, it makes sense to connect both . . . but as yet, I've not worked up the enthusiasm to pull mine out, remove the "Y" connection and do it.

Beloved just runs both washer and drier any time running on economy time would help, cant just put a timer in line with the electronic gubbins, would lower peak use for the generators as well

As I discovered washing new works jumpers on 40c wash rather than cold a year or several ago . . .

Years ago, when I worked outside I bought some thermal underwear, my wife put in the tumbledrier. I came out about the right size for a 2 year old, but half an inch thick, knackered it up completely. It did say cool wash & no tumble on the label though!

I run a timer on ours, all new-ish machines. I was particularly dubious of the washing machine (Bosch) but it works fine. The timer switches a contactor, I don't trust timer current ratings
