4 Axle stands - are they safe?

Well I had a mate come over with a big garage jack and we got the capri into an elevated position

My mate didn't like the idea of putting the front crossmember on top of the ramps and asured me the wheel would not role over the end of the ramps or rock them due to the design, even withthe back raised higher, within reason.
So we drove it up, jacked the back up and got the new stands under the axle at 600mm. Theres was another hole/100mm to go up on the stands but it looked fine and plenty safe so we left it at that.

Do yourself a favour, and go find something solid to stick under the car while your under it, *just in case*...
Ive had axle stands fail in the past, and collapsed a ramp once too (although I think that was because it had got old and rusty). Once my car is up on blocks/stands/ramps, if Im going to be doing stuff where the car can fall on me and crush me, I throw a old oak tree stump thicker than the min clearance between the car, my leg and the ground underneath it. Then if the worst happens, it drops onto the stump and stops and Im changing underpants instead of in the hospital.
Perhaps the underneath of the car would get damaged, but my legs end up unflattened and still attached...
I rate still having my limbs as worth the 2 mins extra effort to throw it under...

i've just been thinking about getting some new axle stands, but may go for making a framework box x 4 and just placing the wheels on them (bit like a car ramp but no ramp.

sounds like an idea...

how about making them oblong rather than square when looking from the end (image a bigger version of a brick)?

That way you've a choice of two different heights to set them to.

Trouble is that you can't have the wheels off. UNLESS you build the boxes with a fixing plate/face to bolt onto the hubs. Might be nice to have heavy duty castors underneath as well so they are like tall dollys.
Anyway. my setup has been fine. The sand blaster I used was crap though lol
