4.5" angle grinder recommendations?

They are still made but I wont be buying any more of them, the newer ones are no better than the Aldi/lidi offerings. I bought three of them and they have all failed.

Even if they were you would have more chance of goosing the queen than getting an exchange, repair or refund. Sending anything back these days and expecting any response is normally futile unless you have the time to wear them down.

I found that recently getting a drill replaced, fried itself 3 years into a 5 year warranty.
Took a couple of months and many emails, got it in the end though, I can see how someone might give up, for me it was a matter of principle.

Is that Bosch specifically, or a general reference? I'd heard that their return/repair setup is/was quite good?

Longevity will depend on where you buy your bosch grinders. I have one that was bought from a local hardware shop & it has the expected decent build quality. I have another one bought from Screwfix on one of their 'offers' & it feels cheap & nasty in comparison, obviously built to a price so that Screwfix could flog it cheaply!

I have 3 Metabo grinders & they are by far my favourite. Really powerful & their anti vibration system means they are nice to use for prolonged periods. But the downside is that the body is fatter than the bosch but I can use still them one handed with size 9 hands.

Makita for me, I have two. Small and compact so ideal for car stuff which I mainly use them for.

Figured if it lasts 2 years I’ll have had my money’s worth out of it as I use them quite often.
My last cheap basic one lasted 6 years before it stopped, might even take it apart to see if it’s anything obvious, could just be brushes as there was no magic smoke it just stopped working.

Bought two of these from BandQ for occasional use when they were on special offer, iirc three tools for £30 Inc vat. If its the same model They didn't last long both giving out magic smoke. BandQ weren't interested and Macalister wouldn't answer their phones.
The German supermarket ones are much better imo.

I use to kill the cheapo ones pretty quickly.

My favourite corded grinders are now the Hilti AG 115, very well made with soft start etc, slim body, 850w power, and an impeccable warranty/repair service. Not cheap though, and you need an account.
Other than that... I'd just buy a Milwaukee.

Can't be on with cheap grinders, what's the point? By the time you've faffed around breaking it, buying another and wasted time, it would have paid to just buy one good one (and then feel righteously narked if it breaks down)
Aside form that though, the reduced vibration and better ergonomics of a quality grinder are well worth paying for IMO.

Surely these two grinders had different model numbers? Were they the same colour?

This certainly the case with white electrical goods from different sources - the main model number is the same but the suffix tells the story…. Like some dishwashers have base, sides and top sections screwed together, but the cheaper variants of the same model are held together with bent tabs.

Checking the finer details and asking pertinent questions, to the right people, will reveal the subtleties - but often the price difference is the initial give-away.

The big chain stores like Screwfix, B&Q, etc are well known for this. They go to Makita for example, tell them we want 100,000 cordless 18v drills & they most cost us no more than £50. Dewalt then make the drill, using cheaper components where they can so that they come under the £50 price. Then the retailer can sell that drill a lot cheaper than anywhere else.

Often the power tools in Screwfix have a unique model no not available anywhere else. For example the current deal of a Makita DHP453STE, charger & 2 x 5Ah batteries for £139.99. You won't find that model for sale anywhere else apart from maybe other shops in the Kingfisher group like B&Q.

I ended up buying bothe Bosch GWS 7-115 and 9-115s. I haven't used them but inital thoughts are:
The casing and weight are almost identical. The lead on the 9-115s is much more flexible and possibly be made of rubber. It also has a spring loaded button for removing and adjusting the guard. The spindle lock button is also larger and easy to press. A downside is that the switch takes a bit more force to operate than the 7-115.
I managed to score the 9-115s for almost the same money as the 7-115, so overall im pleased. I'll be sending the 7-115 back, but will update once i've had a go with the other one.

Personally I’m going down the route of 110v tools they seem to last slightly better than thier 240v counter parts.

They should. Likely because they are for the trade rather than the 240V DIYer Market.

True but you wouldn’t think there would be any real difference between 240 and 110 v exact same models (ie case etc etc) but some how there is. But I see your point.

I dunno, 110v grinders die just the same as 240v in my experience...
