I hadn't thought/considered that fact, it's never the straight forward is it. I guess I need to speak to a manufacturer of vfds as to be honest I'm a little lost on all of this.

If it's *just* for a table saw, here's what I'd do:
Put a smaller blade on it - presumably, it's going to have a 12" or 16" blade at that hp?
Go for a 10" blade, unless you are regularly cutting 4" + thickness in hardwood.
Run a 32a single phase to the workshop.
Start looking for a BIG single phase motor.
I paid a fiver for a 16a 240v single phase motor from the scrappie.
Think it's rated 4hp continuous?
I run my table saw with that - 250mm blade gives me about 75mm of cut depth and i've cut damp logs, fence posts, scaffold boards, 1" phenolic ply, 6mm aluminium, perspex , and run a 20mm grooving saw (thats only about 6" diameter tho)
Basically, if it's a one-man wood shop, you don't need three phase (IMHO) - old cast iron machinery with 3-phase motors can all be swapped for single phase motors.
Imo, it's only mills and lathes that NEED 3ph - and they need a VFD for speed control.
The only other wood machine that might
need 3ph is a spindle moulder.
Mine had stepped pulley to adjust spindle speed. Some might have electronic speed control? - I don't know

Radial arm saws can't have the motor changed cheaply - certainly the dewalt/elu/b+d/powershop ones have a non standard size case, and a bespoke shaft which acts as the saw arbour.
The only way to get a matching single phase motor is to buy a scrap single phase RAS with a working motor. By which time, you might as well buy a working 1ph saw.
Not sure about the wadkin ones, but from the hour I spent watching someone else use one (I was labouring/feeding) I believe they are the same.
So add RAS to the list of machines that need a convertor of some type.

Ok you need one per motor. But you can set them up to do it very very nicely and you can loose the inrush vcurrents that cause problems, some do emergency stop there are meany meany features and tbh they don’t cost much, sometimes the stop go button wires need redirecting from contractors or folks starters into the VFD inputs but have allways managed it so far

What kind of saw are you looking at, an old Wadkin or similar? I've noticed quite a few of these for sale recently, I assume there has been a H&S crackdown and the saws were going to cost too much to meet the regulations.
I wanted to upgrade to a cast iron table saw & I looked into buying a Wadkin but they all seem to be 3 phase. By the time I bought the saw, fitted either a vfd or big single phase motor it was going to cost over £1000! Then I came across a nice vintage saw, 12" blade, single phase for just £290. It is now sitting on my trailer, waiting until I get my shed organised to get it in.
