Your back gear lever is in a strange position

Ahh, the whole lathe was only in fair condition when I bought it, some teeth broken on back gears, sliding gear in headstock bolted to drive pulley etc. After some temporary repairs I had the back gear working with the lever in that position. Since then I bought some parts off another lathe and all is well, lever now correct.

My latest project. Bought a Boxford screw cutting lathe at a reasonable price off eBay. The back gears had bust teeth and the sliding gear/pulley on the main spindle was also broken. Have repaired all and built a table with a drain in it for if it ever has suds system. now cleaning, painting...

a 1 hp quality old english motor will be fine/ if not a foreign or a clark 1,5 hp

Another way that I see it needing a motor with more power @brightspark is because, will a vfd slow the motor down or does it only increase the rpm? If slowing a 1hp motor from 1500rpm to maybe 900rpm it will not in my opinion have a 1hp output, but I could easily be wrong as I don't know.

No, you are correct if you slow the motor down it does not output as much power because the power calculation references RPM. It affects the torque much less though so it should still turn a larger part just not at the same RPM.

Thanks @pete , last question then, does a 1hp 220v 3 phase motor produce more power that a 1hp single phase motor? Approx how much more?

240v single or 415 3 phase 1 horsepower or any other hp are identical. the only diffrence is a 3 phase will have a better starting torque
