Which company was that? @bR39Da - I am sadly only a dumb car mechanic - I not sure which electrodes to use - let alone who makes them?

I do know thou - I need a rod that lights up on low OCV - as I am having to use AC for the MMA application - due to magnetic arc blow.

(electricity I understand - chemical composition of metals and rod coatings I don't)

ESAB 2 years before they decided they were not a technical company they just wanted to be box shifters.

i've moved right away from esab products. Bohler i use now. EV50.

Try ESAB Goldrox, light up really easy, i'd call them a tacking rod. Haven't tried them on AC mind. Or oerlikon.

Box shifting is where the money is - I get it.

I have tried a file - this just breaks off big lumps of flux exposing rod as you described.

Glue/nail/staple some coarse emery cloth (I used P60) to a bit of wood & before you start welding push the end of the rod into the sandpaper & twist the rod. Not as aggressive as a file & works 90% of the time.

If you want something in between a 6013 and 7018 in terms of both mechanical and easy restarts look at a double coated electrode, such as oerlikon special, Utp comet j50n. Very good for bolt removal.

Cheers Peter. I'll bear them in mind. The nice thing about 6013 is that they do store well.

Got a few Vodex that are nearly as old as I am I reckon and they are bloody lovely. Previous owner died at nearly 90.

cant see the restart prob with 7018
after burning a few tons its easy
6013 is for paint stirring . and youtube welders using the slag inducing woodpecker technique !
never ceases to amuse me what they repair with them

yeah. 7018s are bad enough. We get spoiled with the restart qualities of 6013. Possibly the only thing going for them.

Try 7014....when still hot, they will light off when you just get the rod within an inch of the puddle.....BOOM !
