Ok, so after moving, I have started messing around with the Z-axis of my milling machine, and issue number one is I have to make 30mm'ish hole in the base of the machine, to be able to fit a lead screw (the z axis was previously driven by rack/pinion, but that was shockingly bad so has been removed).
I'll upload a photo in the next post (off the phone), but the main problem is:
I can't fit the base onto my pillar drill, because it wont fit, so it has to be hand held tools.
I managed to drill a 10mm hole straight through with a makita 18v drill (drilling in steps (3, 5, 8, 10mm)).
Then I had the brilliant idea of using a step drill (mainly to see if it would work at all), and to be fair it has removed quite a bit of material and quite quickly, but sadly also the drill was a bit much for the hand held drill and I think it's now given up the ghost, ahem...
Options I'm considering are:
- hole-saw in hand-held drill
- using an sds drill, as it might be a bit more manly than the 18v drill, but not sure if that's a good idea (do people drill non concrete type materials with SDS drills? I'd guess it would depend on the drill bit used, but still).
- jigsaw to cut pieces out of it, sort of like a pie
- chain drilling around the perimeter and cleaning up with die grinder.
any advice welcome.
