Personally I'd use a mandrel bend where ever possible as these are logically more free flowing of the exhaust gases. And if you are able to use a bigger radius then again that's got to be better than a sharp 90 for gas movements (logically again as I'm no motor sport expert) but if it did need to be a tighter 90 lobster back is the answer.  
I think done well they can look good. I put one in on the exit pipe of my old k4 thou to create a higher lift can and it looked lovely
BUT. done badly and there is no hiding it. They look awful.
