3 phase at home?

Three and a half grand, same as what I was quoted...
Has anybody actually succeeded in getting their neighbours to "lend" them a phase?

I was told that 3 phase is actually cheaper, When i think about it my previous workshop had 3 phase and the bills were never huge.

I actually have 3 phase in the house, only 1 connected and in use, but in our leccy cupboard there is on almighty cable coming up from the ground, which splits into 3. We have 3 main fuses, but only on in use. The others are live and are different phases, I've checked.

I'll bet it'd still cost a King's ransom if I actually wanted to use 3 phase though.

I got 3 phase connected to my barn for free! EDF came knocking asking for a wayleave to recable the 11kv transformer and 11 poles of theirs that we have on the farm. I'd just submitted an application for 3 phase, so said sure no problem when I get my three phase <G> I now have a 3 ph 160 amp per phase supply that is direct off their transformer.

Means I have an almost unused single to 3 phase rotary converter (Transwave 15 KW) that is up for grabs - keep meaning to put it on eBay. Literally used for under ten hours!

from what I recall they really dont like 3p in domestic properties & so price accordingly

I have 2 phase into my house,unfortunately there isn't 3 phases where I live so I just use one of the phases & have a transwave for my 3 phase equipment.

cheaper to get a big three phase Genny .

Not as crazy as it sounds. A decent brand new super silenced 70Kw genny should cost around 12-15 grand.

Before I moved to the farm I ran some kit off the Transwave, but the bigger stuff ran off an Agreko 100KVA 3 phase genny. It was ex water authority standby and although not very modern has only 375 hours on the clock! Has a 150 hp 6 cylinder turbo charged Ford engine in it.

Good thing is it is in a towable enclosure (twin axle) so can easily be moved. EDF actually borrowed it to run a local nursing home while they were recabling recently in the village. Redundant now so I suppose I should sell it really.

We had an extension built on our place three years ago, this meant we had to have the old power supply removed & a temporary supply laid on until building was finished. I asked how much to stay single phase or put 3 phase on.
Single phase supply was £387 the 3 phase cost £489, all i had to do was lay an underground duct across the garden for the cable to run from the board overhead cables. With the price of single phase motors & converters i went the 3 phase road & its great!
