It's interesting how people on here will quote exact figures without direct experience. when I rang my electricity supplier, they told me to ring the network/distribution people, and they sent me a 15-odd page form just to apply for a quote!! they certainly wouldn't even give an indication over the phone.
I think Sam's experience proves, if you can do all the ground works on your own property yourself, and if you're near to a suitable supply, then it can be done relatively cheaply.
They're a couple of pretty big 'Ifs' though.

i caught one out fiddling landlords meter he took out the outgoing mains tails and joined them up with incomers trouble was when he reconected he got them the wrong way round and there was a neutral to earth fault on. needless to say his face was blackened and one blew up meter
